NO FRACKING WAY: the pro-forest protest: 4/14/10

April 14th * Noon to 1pm * 200 S Broad, Broad & Walnut * Gov. Rendell’s Southeast Office
NERD Island is lending its theatrics to the protest against the recent proposal to open up Pennsylvania state forests to natural gas drilling companies. We are looking for one hour of your time to help save our forests. We will provide the costumes and the performance will be loud and fun. Contact Aryon to participate.
The potential problems:
- This obviously disturbs the preserved ecosystem through new service roads and the actual drilling.
- Natural gas drilling uses a process called “fracking” in which millions of gallons of water mixed with chemicals is forced down into the shale in order to extract the gas. These fluids, as well as potential leaks from gas wells and pipes, pose an immense threat to our waterways.
- The timber industry, which employs around 70,000 people, relies on the Pennsylvania state forests, one of the nation’s largest sustainable systems certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Fragmenting our state forests during the drilling process would threaten that certification.

Spend your lunch break making a difference
Time: April 14, 2010, 12:15 PM – 12:45 PM
Location: Gov. Rendell’s Southeast Office
200 South Broad Street (near Broad and Walnut).
Join us during your lunch hour as we conduct a demonstration to support our remarkable state forests. Large drilling companies are pushing to have even more state forests opened for drilling. We need a moratorium on new natural gas leases in state forests and an impact fee on natural gas drilling before we destroy our public natural resources and our legacy. The Governor needs to know that Pennsylvanians want him to be a hero for the state forests.
